I should be reachable over the tunnel AND the Internet. The script is still needed, it just wouldn't include instructions to reach subnets that are only accessible over BGPed 44 addresses. My 44.60.44.0/24 is configured to use a AMPRGW as its default route. I am also able to ping you now (after I corrected the TO/FROM rule I improperly copied). I've always been properly configured (except for Saturday and Sunday, when I re-wrote my script).
