With such a "smart backbone" there is no need whatsoever to arrange networks in
different categories based on their address.
Such settings could be changed at anytime without requiring a renumber.
Ahem... I must say I agree with you, HI :-) I do not see any failure in
your demonstration... Maybe someone from the TAC can object something ?
The beauty of an IP network is that you can connect
that all together in a semi-structured way without having to do it the same way
everywhere.
The problem is not for us (sysops / sysadmins) : we'll always find a
solution. The problem is for end-users : today, connecting to 44net,
HamNet or any local implementation, is far from easy ! Mostly because
some things are out of date, and because some of us developed more
modern things, but nobody is doing the same thing. Then, having some
kind of standardization, defining a common subset of rules/protocols
that would work the same way everywhere in the world, would probably
help for mass adoption. People would just have to read a tutorial, pick
a standard configuration file for their favorite router (or a VPN client
software for their favorite OS), enter a few personal data for
registration, and connect to their favorite POP (which is not
necessarily the nearest, nor in the same country), and it would work...
The goal is not to provide just IP connection, because it can cause too
much hassle with NAT traversal and various ISP routers all over the
world. The purpose is to provide easy, ready-to-use, Plug and Play
configurations, that can establish a connection to any POP behind any
kind of connection (Internet or radio). This implies common choices, for
the tunneling protocol(s), for authentication, for route exchange,
etc... And we all will have to implement this common set of features.
Without removing the ability for everybody to experiment other things
(which is one of the goals of amateur radio in general), I think more
structuring and standardization than now is mandatory...
