Dual addressing means complicated policy based
routing.
Dual addressing may be complicated now because some 44.x subnets are
annouced on BGP while some others are not, because some people are not
aware about the fact they must route 44.190 differently, etc...
The purpose of the TAC proposal is to simplify things by splitting /
grouping networks into two big subnets, with just two "parent" routing
policies. What may be complicated is migrating/renumbering some current
heterogeneous networks and routing policies to fit into the new scheme.
But policy routing by itself has nothing complicated. Basically, there
will be only two policies...
The remaining 44net that we have today is ham only. Thus if one does not the internet to
reach his/her subnet, all they have to do is add a simple firewall rule allowing 44/8 and
44.128/10 and denying the rest. That is a lot easier than policy based routing or dual
addressing. That would allow fellow hams to reach the subnet, but not the rest of “the big
bad internet”
If you want your subnet to be reachable from Internet, or from other
44net subnets over Internet, then, you'll have to announce it via BGP
(or IP-IP trick, but I think we all agree about the fact it's a thing of
the past). Then, your 44net can not be considered as "ham-only" :-)
In contrast, European Hamnet does not have any connection to Internet,
and none of its subnets are (AFAIK) announced via BGP. Your network and
Hamnet currently have completely different topologies, and need
different routing policies. My 44.168 is not announced on Internet, but
my 44.190 is. We all have different networks, built over the years, but
there's not always coherence between them. The TAC proposal is just a
way to "group" similar topologies in two big categories (Internet and
Intranet), and to locate them in two big subnets, so that routing is
made easier.
Keep in mind the main goal is to have a complete redesign of 44net,
including a backbone, POPs, Access routers, etc... For that, we need to
cleanup / reorder / normalize the base...
