well, Brian (n1uro) could explain it better than I...something to do
with not being able to set ttl and mtu so that traceroute works
properly...my os is:
Linux 3.10.25+ #622 PREEMPT Fri Jan 3 18:41:00 GMT 2014 armv6l GNU/Linux

'Seem' is the operative word here. What version of the OS are you
running? Here I'm using 3.10.24+ (Dec.19, 2013) clean install. How
exactly does the 'tun' problem present itself?
