Many folks use AMPRnet to connect a BBS to other BBSs worldwide, using AXIP
(AX.25 over IP) links.
You don't need much hardware. Some create a separate gateway on a small,
separate linux machine. This can be advantageous if you have more than one
physical server behind the gateway. Some create the gateway on the same
linux machine that runs their BBS. It just depends on what you want to do.
BTW, most hams sign their emails using their call sign.
