Plusnet do absolutely no filtering on their backbone that would affect any
non malicious use of a DSL connection. It all happens in their provided
router/modem combo

The firewalling is usually done by the PlusNet backbone. Changing your
router won't help.
I am not connected to 44net but I do have a DrayTek Vigor 2862 connected to
PlusNet FTTC (There are several options depending on need)
It wasn't cheap but I got it for the site-2-site VPN which I use to keep up
to date with what is happening in my house in Spain.
You should check the spec but I think it will do what you need to 44 net,

Subject: [44net] Modem
Hi Guys
Looking for a UK compatible modem/router/DSL to use with TalkTalk. I can
then
switch off ALL firewall nat and filtering and
pass ALL traffic through to
my
pfSense router/firewall and allow the usual 4 and
93 and ICMP.
Waiting with hope in the heart
