Why not use DNS?
I have a testing domain setup at arlink.net
See how it works for some D-STAR linking services
host -t SRV _dextra._udp.arlink.net
host -t SRV _dplus._udp.arlink.net
host -t SRV _dcs._udp.arlink.net
It could easily support BBS and other services.

Maybe there is a way to do (code) something similar for the more
traditional nodes on the amprnet.
Advertising what is out there on a network seems to be a major issue
at least in my eyes.
