I stumbled into a useful function that the Hamnet/HSMM folks have:
http://hsmm-mesh.org/hsmm-mesh-forums/view-postlist/forum-1-general/topic-58...
Maybe there is a way to do (code) something similar for the more traditional nodes on the amprnet.
Advertising what is out there on a network seems to be a major issue at least in my eyes.
Why not use DNS?
I have a testing domain setup at arlink.net
See how it works for some D-STAR linking services
host -t SRV _dextra._udp.arlink.net host -t SRV _dplus._udp.arlink.net host -t SRV _dcs._udp.arlink.net
It could easily support BBS and other services.

DNS -
Can a service or host advertise itself? That's the missing piece even with the OLSRD/HampMESH magic. I believe we'll get that using Bonjour/Zeroconf (or what ever it's called this week...)

With DNS, one would only need to provide an authenticator to allow self update of services offered.
In a connected LAN, bonjour/zeroconf can work well for advertized services.
