Although i dont like the Chinese products you are right
The quality and acurecy is far from getting close to professional gear
I have a portable pocket size spectrum analayser from hf to 2.6GHZ continues in size of VHF handheld it is a stand alone unit with small display
It have connection to big computer with software to get more features on the computer via USB
cost me 350 $
Of course it dont beat any professional gear
It have only 100 samplepoint for full span which give low resolution bandwidth (depend on the scan span)
It scan the whole band in about a second and therefore dont measure quick events so well
it consist of a Radio chip which serve for TV tuner which scanning the band and of course it dont have a high dynamic range
but still for 350 $ you can get powerful toy I use it a lot when im in the field and want to "see" the spectrum and get quick idea what is in the area
