I'm seeing many many login attempts as root on telnet.
Are they targetting just 44 ?

... it's normal :(
If you can't or wan't use a firewall, change your telnet/ssh tcp port to a non standard one.
Brute Force Attacks are 99% script-based and target standard udp & tcp port ( telnet -> 23/tcp, ssh -> 22/tcp).
