Pedja, it is not the only usable solution, and it requires a powerful
router.
Tom Hayward's script running on another machine and connecting to the router
via ssh is more "energy efficient" and works very well.

44net networking is designed in manner that is not how standard routers
are supposed to work.
Search list archive for Marius YO2LOJ posts about Mikrotik. Recently, he
provided the only usable solution.
The best for now is to give up, and use some Linux device (like
Raspberry Pi) to set 44networking.
If you really like to use Mikrotik, you can seek for someone who is
already connected to allow you access and routing via VPN. There are
fellow hams willing to do that.
