It is still part of Thunderbird, Outlook, etc. so there are still sufficient clients.
Jnos/Tnos can be used as NNTP server/client too.

It wouldn't be a bad idea,
but the dearth of clients means it
will probably never be widely used.
INN is good software, and still being maintained. It's a bit
complicated to set up, but works well. You just have to choose
your peers very carefully.
