Running Linux on virtualization was actually pretty smooth. My AMPR gateway
is running on VMWare now. Takes 10 seconds to boot. Very nice....

Sounds like you want virtualization. Fortunately, it's trivial with Linux.
Not so much with a Mikrotik router.
