And of course I’m no longer in the gateways list… If this is because I don’t reply to
pings, unfortunately I can no longer receive gateway broadcasts so that would be expected,
no?

To be in the gateways list, you have to have both a gateway and
an associated network. Your gateway is still there, but there
is no network associated with it, so you're not in the gateways
list. When your network is restored and re-associated with your
gateway, you'll automagically re-appear in the gateways list.
