I recently planned to come over to present what is going on in Germany and surrounding countries. I'm in the impression that most subscribers of the 44net mailing list are not aware which movement is going on in this area. The activities are not reflected on this list since most of the communication is in German language. However the wireless GHz network here is about to grow behind the German speaking area :) Unfortunately I can't make it this year to DCC, but I plan to come over for DCC 2014. For your planned discussions I just want to point out the most important reasons why we are currently not using the AMPRNet Portal at all. I just registered our netblock 44.130.0.0/16 and 44.224.0.0/15 for the German allocation. Even the Austrian and Swiss networks are just registered without any further allocations. In Germany the IP-coordination team (Thomas, DL9SAU, Egbert, DD9QP and Jann, DG8NGN) allocate subnets to people in different areas. This could be easily reflected by the AMPRNet portal, however I'm pretty sure I can't explain each area administrator how to use the portal. The area administrators theirself allocate subnets to different administrators of automatic amateur radio stations. Within that subnet the IP-addresses for endusers are provided using DHCP. An example: 44.224.0.0/15 -> DG8NGN (German IP coordination) 44.225.20.0/22 and 44.224.10.0/23 -> DL3MBG (south Bavaria area) 44.225.20.128/26 -> DC5SL (maintainer of Olympic Tower Munich DB0TVM) 44.225.20.160/27 -> DHCP-Range for local users Everything is reflected here: http://hamnetdb.net/?m=as&q=db0tvm Just today I received a registration request from a user over the portal. Additionally he wrote me a few minutes later in private mail that he wants to connect to the Olympic Tower and needs an IP address... It simply doesn't work that way. I can't assign a fixed A-record to a user since the same user wants to use his equipment in Berlin or Hamburg as well and there he will get another IP address by DHCP. At least the A-record can't be set within a reasonable time nor without manual interaction of a coordinator... We are thinking about to get the functionality back using CNAME records. E.g. "dg8ngn.ampr.org" has a CNAME record pointing to "dg8ngn.dyn.de.ampr.org". The mechanism to update "dg8ngn.dyn.de.ampr.org" with the current IP-address is still under construction (e.g. dhcp-44-225-20-165.db0tvm.ampr.org --> dg8ngn.dyn.de.ampr.org). Same construct will apply on VPN access to the AMPRNet (e.g. http://wiki.ampr.org/index.php/AMPRNet_VPN). You will get an IP-address which will not be reachable by "<call>.ampr.org". For now I just want to point out that we still need a reasonable way to update the ampr.org domain with our data. Flori, DL8MBT, and I did have a lot of discussions how we can use http://hamnetdb.net to help with the German IP administration since the offical site is http://www.de.ampr.org. Currently the HAMNETDB is a "wiki-style" tool with user-accounts and unlimited backlog for tracing changes. We did never had an abuse since you can only make changes with your personal login (which is recorded in every dataset). However we were thinking about how to lock down access to certain IP-address ranges like it is done by the AMPRNet Portal. This way we have a customized and localized version of the AMPRNet Portal just for our region. Unfortunately we never did have time to get more in touch with the international AMPRNet guys so far. There are so many ideas how to move forward with the AMPRNet. Hope to get in soon...
