Thanks Brian!  I think verifying an item in the data itself is more reliable than checking the result of the transfer.  Which wget doesn't support anyway. It also covers the case where the .tar.gz file would be incomplete for some reason, e.g. running out of space. (I probably added the check for 255.255.255 at some point when that or another undetected error occurred...)
