Hi all,
I noticed this morning there was a notification that my callsign verification was due to expire in a few months time.
The ACMA stopped sending paper licenses back in 2016, going digital-only with a PDF you download from the website (with no authentication).
In 2024 they moved the Amateur Radio service from being an apparatus-licensed service for which we pay an annual fee and receive (as a PDF) a soft-copy of the license; to a class-licensed system wherein there is no license fee, and no license issued of any kind. Glorified CB essentially.
Force-Majeure… these are circumstances beyond my control.
What verification evidence does the ARDC accept? Or should we prepare for 44net to disappear from Australia's packet radio networks forever?
Regards,
Just send us a copy of the PDF document. All we are trying to do is verify your callsign exists, and it is associated with you.
FCC stopped sending paper licenses out to U.S. Hams long ago as well.
44net is not going to disappear from Australia, honest.

I haven't lost my mind... ...it's backed up on a tape somewhere.
Hi Dave.
That's the problem. In Australia now, there is no longer any document of any kind issued to attest callsign use/ownership. None.
Long story short, it's basically an honour system now: a class license, like the FCC part 95 in the US.
Many of us still have various forms of certificate from when we passed our exams, but they're not linked to any callsign.

He said he could download a PDF of his license. Just like here in .US. That is good enough for ARDC.

I could last time… that was nearly 12 months ago. If I do it now, I'll be submitting the exact document I submitted 12 months ago. It referenced an expiry of 2025-01-15.
If I do it after 15th January next year, the document will no longer be on the ACMA Register of Radiocommunication Licenses… I'll have been force-transitioned to being on the class license. Even if I use the file I have now, the existing one from the ACMA will be considered invalid at that point. There is no replacement following it because the ACMA no longer issues them.
My callsign is old enough (October 2008) that there's no "letter" saying I was assigned this call other than the license renewal notices, which would otherwise imply I no longer hold this callsign.
There's no WIA callsign recommendation document for me, as that was brought in later. Only those licensed circa 2012 or so would have such a document.
As mentioned, the ACMA assist portal (login required) will continue to show your callsign allocation, and you can take a screen shot of this.
This is the same portal you will need to use every 5 years to confirm you are still alive and using your callsign.

Worth noting too that ACMA does still issue and manage callsigns, and they expire 5 years after they were last confirmed (no cost to reconfirm, just to issue).
If they didn't do this, they wouldn't have a reliable way to recover usernames from silent keys or those no longer using them for other reasons and we'd eventually run out.

Ahh right, I never recall being provided a log-in for the ACMA Assist portal. I'll have to have a rummage through the old documentation they sent me with the licenses.

You will need an identity document such as a passport, driver’s licence, birth or citizenship certificate to verify your identity.
Hmmm… - never learned to drive ⇒ no driver's license - never went overseas ⇒ no passport - did not immigrate to Australia ⇒ no citizenship certificate
No worries, as a non-person I'll de-activate the ARDC account next year when the callsign verification expires.
People who *do* exist though, looks like the above is what is required to prove you have a callsign.

But presumably you were born and have a birth certificate?

I’ve had my license for 20 years and first time I’ve ever even heard of ACMA assist, I even have repeater licenses, this has to be a new thing, will have to go and figure out how we get access!

Yep Brooky, it only appeared in the last ~6 months or so. It wasn’t a thing last JOTA, but it was a thing this JOTA (although no way for me to get a scouts call for JOTA - ACMA assist says go to your state bureau, Scouts NSW says they have no idea, go to the ACMA.. sigh.. So VK2DGJ transmitted Voice modes for the first time in 10 years lol)
