IMHO, SMTP on a web gui is still email... </if it's not broke dept>
All too often I see "new apps" taking existing and established
techonologies and simply changing their appearances and calling them
"new".
When we can no longer run our own services we might as
well abandon
the entire AMPRNet...
That was always one of the good things that amprnet did - as was
discussed earlier (usenet/nntp for example) was something created by BK
and if I'm not mistaken it's still the primary forwarding system for
W0RLI's snos. In fact, many guys still run a variant of xNOS and we all
know the age of nos!
If there's a technical issue with the mailman system or if it's getting
punted by UCSD, I can understand a temporary move of sorts while things
get sorted out. A few days of no 44-net mail wouldn't be the end of the
world either while repairs are done. Of course, backups are key as well.
If we start to move services out of our direct physical control, what
would happen if 44/8's control was moved to an outside entity not
involved with amateur radio? I would think that'd be the beginning of
the end of amprnet as we know it to parallel what Rob said. <$.02>
