I just made some requests via the AMPRNet portal to create some DNS records in the ampr.org domain, and the requests were rejected with the following remark:
"DNS is not active yet, please subscribe to the 44-Net mailing list to keep advised of progress."
I presume they are referring to this mail list.
So, how do I get DNS records created in the ampr.org domain? I understand that in the past, there was an email robot, but I have been unable to find any details on how to use it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Many thanks, Matt VK2RQ

There is an old email robot that is available to your regional address coordinator, or you may send your requests to me.
We hope to have the DNS portion of the portal available in some weeks but there is a question of how to transition from the old robot to the new portal DNS that has yet to be settled.
The changeover may require everyone to re-enter their DNS entries at the portal unless we can come up with a better way of doing it. The problem is that the existing DNS records are filled with obsolete and incorrect entries so we can't simply grandfather all the old records into the new system.
In the meantime you can send me an email with what you need updated in the DNS and I'll take care of it. - Brian
The existing DNS records (those that are in the DNS servers, that is) also contain lots of good entries.
So, why not preload the portal with whatever is currently in the ampr.org and 44.in-addr.arpa zone files? The worst you'd get is what you have now, so you'd be no worse off.
To gradually remove old records, you could add a "renewal" date field so that everyone has to reaffirm that each record is valid every, say, 3 years (what our local repeater coordinator requires). Renewal could be as simple as logging into your account, navigating to the DNS page, placing a check mark next to each record that is valid, and pressing "confirm" or whatever, which would reset the clock for that record for another 3 years. If you're anxious to purge existing errors, you could even make the first time-out be something shorter, like 6 months.

You could start by purging all addresses which have no gateway allowing them to be reached... At least for YO that will remove at least 50%

Will there be another mechanism to update the DNS entries besides the portal? Our local backend is feeding our DNS updates on a daily basis by email. We need a proper replacement if the email robot will be turned off.

A cleanup of the ampr.org zone would be very nice. Are there any offical rules how the records should look like (e.g. each A-record needs to include [*.]<callsign>.ampr.org) in future? Of course we should keep the experimental character of amateur radio in mind... Currently we have some nice and useful "exceptions" in the zone file.

No, I don't think there's a need for an official rule that the callsign must be in the hostname, but I do think it's a very good idea to do just that. Perhaps a strong recommendation? - Brian
eg:
gw.wb6cyt in a 44.64.0.1 linux.wb6cyt in a 44.64.0.2 wombat.wb6cyt in a 44.64.0.3 wb6cyt in cname gw.wb6cyt wb6cyt in mx 10 gw.wb6cyt kk6uc in a 44.64.0.4
etc
I hope that the dns email robot still remains because it is a very handy convenient way if you are near a server system without X-windows or if you have to make several entries at once. It just works quicker and I have a record of it.

Yes it still works, I've been using it a lot to clean up 44.135.X.X Canada
