The preferred solution is to use the API, you can then run a cronjob at whatever frequency you prefer to check for changes and update your routes.

It's more future proof for a start. It's also more secure. The API also provides a greater range of services and the range will expand in the future. There will not be any further development work done on the email or FTP services.
