Hi folks
Anyone running rip44d with ubuntu server 14.04 ?
I have been for a while but after a recent update its now causing the server to hang on reboots :-(
Running kernel 3.13.0-37
I can get in to the server using recovery mode and disable the loading and all is OK so I know its a compatibility issue.

Andy. Try to use ampr-ripd by Marius YO2LOJ! http://www.yo2loj.ro/hamprojects/ampr-ripd-1.11.tgz Cool stuff, I use it myself for quite a long time. Best regards. Tom -- SP2L (ex sp2lob)
Thanks Tom
Will let everyone know how I get on.

I suggest to run it manually from a command shell and see what kind of errors are displayed. You can also open a second shell and run tail -f /var/log/syslog so that you can see syslog as it is appended with new information when you start rip44d.
Hopefully that will give you a clue.

Hi Andy,
I also have this problem altho I use the Desktop Linux Lite V2.0.
My main system is Ubuntu 10.04.4 but I wanted to upgrade to a later version Ubuntu 14.04, this worked fine running Version 1.08 and initially ran well after reinstall of V2.0.
The problem started with the kernel upgrade in V2.0, on restart it just simply panics then freezes.
Bob SP2L (ex SP2LOB) suggested I try ampr-ripd but I get the same result with that also.
I think I will go back to Debian and try that.

Peter, what are these results? Only hanging on reboot or other issues, too?
If you do a 'killall ampr-ripd' before reboot, does the reboot work?

Hi Marius,
It totally locks up the laptop instantly, this I think is not the fault of rip44d or ampr-ripd but is in the kernel 3.13.0.
It appears this way when it is a new install and yet if you do an upgrade from an earlier version, all appears ok.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
In my case it hangs at the boot screen just after “setting network security” comes up. Its a server so no GUI to play with and the keyboard remains active you just can’t do anything other than reboot. Interestingly you can’t CTRL ALT Delete to reboot and hitting CTRL ALT F1 gets you another screen but then it totally hangs.
I get in via recovery mode at which point I can remove the entry that starts rip44d, reboot and its fine.
When I run rip44d manually it does nothing, and more importantly adds nothing to syslog. CTRL C gets me back to the command shell so its all a bit odd.
I’m building a fresh install of the server again. This server was very basic, its running 14.04, I have OpenVPN installed and use this to access 44 net so no other services apart from rip44d running (if you discount SSH server).
I did think I had been hacked but then I only have one inbound port open for the VPN and I had hardened the server as much as I could so feel confident it was OK.
It did all happen after the update, note to self…. image machine before updating.. (Paul G4APL, yes I learnt the hard way :-> ).
Will let you know how the fresh install goes, I suspect it will be fine.

Hi Andy,
If rip44d is listening to the broadcasts and generates the tunnel routes normally something else maybe going on. It maybe very well that the tunnel interface is starting too early.
My script what is starting up the ax25 daemons, fbb, etc. and rip44d sleeps for a while before these are started so that I know everything has settled down after the boot process.

Hi Bob
Thanks for that, I did actually put a sleep command in but then thought.. no that won’t work :-)
Will have a play.

You're not seeing a kernel panic, Oops, or anything else? One thing you might try doing is enabling a serial console and send the kernel boot messages to the serial console vs. the VGA console. I can help you with the grub configuration to do that if you'd like.
When I run rip44d manually it does nothing, and more importantly adds nothing to syslog. CTRL C gets me back to the command shell so its all a bit odd.
Try running the rip44d with strace and see where it dies. Strace is an extremely helpful tool for tracing bad code. gdb too but it's more complex.

Hi all
For those that are interested here are my findings:
I rebuilt my server from scratch (actually a few times) and everything ran fine until I installed OpenVPN.
So my combination of Ubuntu 14.04 Linux version 3.13.0-37-generic, rip44d and OpenVPN I cannot boot.
By switching to ampr-ripd my issues went away, it may not be just OpenVPN. The server is quite old 32bit hardware with a built in (strange) NIC that has caused me issues in the past. For now I have disabled the inbuilt NIC and used two Netgear I had kicking around.
Onwards and upwards….. thanks for all the suggestions.

Andy.
Next time take PURE Debian, if I may suggest. It's like easy-peasy job with it, Hi! Debian is the best!

Hi Andy,
Runs fine here, I only updated to 14.04.1 recently from 12.04. root@d510:~/Documents/Radio/AX.25# cat /proc/version Linux version 3.13.0-37-generic (buildd@kapok) (gcc version 4.8.2 (Ubuntu 4.8.2-19ubuntu1) ) #64-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 22 21:28:38 UTC 2014
I don't bring up my ax25 interfaces automatically at the moment as I have to fix udev to get my devices renamed the way I want them.
