Much has changed since I've come back to the world of the amprnet... I'll have to search for it.
There is an email robot that has been running alongside the web portal all along, it was advertised on this list and full details of it are available on the portal :-)

But as I said, there are actually no problems outstanding with the gateways part of the portal. It is the other, completely separate parts of the portal, that needs work, namely IP Allocation and DNS.
One thing I do hear from those trying to get on the amprnet via the portal is that they find it to be a bit complex for them. Perhaps we can simplify things?
