Regarding a wiki, I can start drafting notes for a future page.
There's quite of few options available for monitoring though (here's a personal list from least-to-most comprehensive):
- monitoring the LAN/VLAN - NetFlow / traffic reporting from the router - connecting the carrier ISP border and my KB3VWG router with a Layer 1 Hub (I use this method) - running a monitoring software on the device itself and accessing/copying the results - switch port mirroring
I've used a combination of all the methods previously; but beginning yesterday, I begun using a 100 Mbps Layer 1 Hub between my router and carrier Ethernet demarcation.
