I just got the following. One month is way, WAY too short. If my records needed updating every month, it would be a mess and I'd rather just shut down.
Perhaps once a year is a good requirement, just to verify that we're all still alive. But if things are stable, forcing a login every month is just too much.

Hello Michael,
THIS IS A SYSTEM GENERATED EMAIL FROM THE AMPRNET PORTAL.
Your account on the AMPRNet portal has been dormant for over one month.
It is important that you login regularly to ensure that your personal details are up to date, as well as ensuring that any AMPRNet resources allocated to you are correct, e.g. IP allocations, DNS entries, etc.
Please login to the AMPRNet portal soon:
If you have any questions relating to this email, you may reply to it and a human being will read it and respond.

And I still cannot manage my subnet. As a regional co-ordinator for NJ you'd think I could do that.

Morning All,
Ok, an apology to those who received the 6 month warning, that was my mistake. I only meant for the 1 month emails to go out but forgot to untick the 6 month ones!
Now, with regards to these emails: First of all DON’T PANIC !!
Nothing bad is going to happen if you don’t login to the portal once a month, nor does anyone expect you to login every month if you don’t wish to. The email is just a reminder that the portal is there, so if you do happen to change any of your details you are more likely to remember the portal and update your details. We all receive the monthly emails from all the mailing lists we subscribe to, I don’t think it’s asking much to have one email a month in your inbox, which you can just delete if you don’t wish to read it, but at least you will have seen it and the portal, therefore, will be more likely to be remembered if you change your email the following month.
The system is now setup to send emails once a month to anyone who has not logged for at least one month, if you haven’t logged in for at least 6 months the text of the email is slightly different, i.e. a bit more suggestive that you login, after 9 months the text warns you that your account will be de-activated if you continue not to login. After 12 months the email advises you that your account will be de-activated.
So all you have to do is login once a year, as Brian said - not much of an imposition. You don’t even have to “do” anything except login, then log right back out again if you wish - there is no “updating” to do - we just need to know you’re still alive and interested in all things AMPRNet.
If you don’t agree with these timings, or you feel the wording of the emails could be different, then by all means get involved in the process of developing the portal code. If you’re not a programmer, no problem - you can help test code, report bugs, write documentation, suggest improvements, etc.

OK Chris.
A reminder email once a month is customary. But the contents of the email that was sent don't match your description of what you meant to say. The wording of the email includes "warning," is prompting for action "soon", and specifically says we must login once a month.
Specifically: "Subject: Re: [44net] Dormant account warning" (warning usually indicates something bad) "Your account on the AMPRNet portal has been dormant for over one month." (the allocations are actively used) "It is important that you login regularly ..." (evidently not true) "Please login to the AMPRNet portal soon:" (evidently not needed) "... please login to the portal at least once every month and ensure that your details are correct" (evidently not needed)
Based on your description of what you meant to say, I suggest something like the following.
----------------------------------
Subject: Monthly AMPRNet Portal Account Reminder
This is a monthly reminder that you have an account on the AMPRNet portal: https://portal.ampr.org
It is important that you maintain up-to-date records of your personal details and your resource allocations, e.g. IP allocations, DNS entries, etc.
You must login at least once a year to indicate that your account is still active. Other than that, if your records are up-to-date, you don't need to do anything.
If you have any questions relating to this email, you may reply to it and a human being will read it and respond.
Kind Regards, Marvin, The AMPRNet Robot
--- Web: ampr.org Wiki: wiki.ampr.net Portal: portal.ampr.net 44Net mailing list: hamradio.ucsd.edu/mailman/listinfo/.
PORTAL NOTE: If you do not log into your portal account at least once a year, several attempts to contact you by email will be made. If we are unable to contact you, then your account and any IP allocations, DNS entries and gateways under your account will be removed.
WIKI NOTE: If you have any technical information relating to the AMPRNet, please consider adding it to the Wiki so others can benefit from your knowledge.
------------------------------------------
For users who haven't logged in for over a year, I would expect a different message which requests immediate action. The message should be sent a few times, perhaps once a week for a couple of months, before any action is taken to remove an account. Remember, people travel for multi-week vacations, spend time in the hospital, email gets put in spam folders, etc. The damage due to deleting an active account is far greater than the slight problem of letting an account linger for a couple of extra months.
Michael N6MEF
Don't forget that once a person has changed email addresses without updating the portal then return replies to the update announcement will hit the portal indicating such and go into lala land.

I agree. Once a year is adequate. - Brian
I agree also. Make it once every 3 months. That would be better.
