I have very sad news. My good friend, Brian Kantor, WB6CYT https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-qRxpLrc/1/X4/i-qRxpLrc-X4.jpg, suddenly passed away this week at his home in San Diego, California. Brian retired only two years ago after 47 years of service on the staff at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). Way back in the mid 1980s, Brian and I founded AMPRnet, the TCP/IP over amateur radio network. He continued to manage it until his passing.
Brian recently created and served as chair and CEO of Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC), a charitable foundation funded by the sale of unused AMPRnet IPv4 addresses. ARDC promotes STEM education and amateur radio digital development through scholarships and by funding the development of open source hardware and software.
Brian will be sorely missed and impossible to replace. Memorial arrangements will be announced when known.
Phil Karn, KA9Q
Thanks Phil,
I offer my condolences to all who new Brian.

Phil, et al, Very sad news. I first met Brian (and you) at the SCDCC (Southern California Digital Coordinating Council) in the early 80's. Had great get togethers at NK6K, Harold's house after TRW swapmeets, along with Wally, WA6JPR Mike Brock, Skip WB6YMH and many others back in the beginning days of digital in amateur radio. As AMPR coordinator for Los Angeles I did email Brian periodically, but not nearly enough. We have lost a true friend of amateur radio and AMPR. Please pass along any information if there will be any service.
RIP Brian, thanks for your guidance, knowledge and talent. You will be missed.

I caught wind of this approximately 6:45am EDT but was so shocked I couldn't believe it so I wrote to Phil asking for verification. I was stunned to find out that the news I received earlier was indeed true.
He often came to me asking for tips I had to share in some of the projects he was working on to help better AmprNet as a whole and when he asked me to help test them before they were announced I was quite happy to do so. We shared sysadmin knowledge between us, bounced ideas about things off each other and strived to make things as best as possible for new guys to get on the AmprNet.
He was one to answer emails almost instantly no matter what time of day you wrote them, and stayed on top of things to insure amprgate was running for the good of those who rely upon it.
I recently shared knowledge of a BSD distribution in the works that will feature a full ax25 stack and he was quite interested in obtaining it to try out. I wish he was able to see that day.
My condolences to KA9Q, BK's family, and all of us who are impacted by this sad news.
Very sad day in Amateur Radio. My partner and I offer our condelences to Brians family and friends

Very sad news today. After a long hiatus from the 44Net, I was pleasantly surprised that Brian answered one of my requests for help in his usual friendly and helpful manner. We also exchanged a couple of friendly emails about cats. Brian's accomplishments speak for themselves, and he will be truly missed.
I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family and to the community.

I had the pleasure of a few conversations with Brian about 7 years ago when I first started tinkering with AMPR and packet. I never bothered to google the man or his creds before we spoke. Our conversations were very casual and we talked like fellow IT geeks for a few min, shared a few network jokes and went on about things. Later I looked him up after he talked a bit about working at UCSD and seen the list of accomplishments and felt privileged that I had a conversation with him. I feel privileged to have spoken to one of the greats in the IT community.
