deFace-book, InstaGrudge, etc., all horrible entities. Even Yahoo which not only is going away with the take over by Vz, but the platform is a very insecure java based platform to which we've seen massive numbers of accounts cracked.
Yahoo is changing to a revamped service focusing on news feeds called Oath. With that many of the current "free" services I hear are slated to vanish such as their yahoo groups, yahoo answers, yahoo messenger, and possibly others.
Brian or anyone thinks Facebook is a bad Idea I will delete the new group.

I've put up a new group on Facebook, called "AmprNet." The title is short and to the point, but doesn't call out our IPv4 history.
Feel free to join and comment.

I won't be tied to any unsocial media site such as defacing-book or instagrudge or the likes. I don't want to see that Suzi's bff stole her bf and now the world is over - and that I see it because a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of someone who liked it shared it on their page. There's no value whatsoever in that crap.

It simple: different media for different purpose. Facebook is ok for short term (daily) info with NO intent to be kept for a history purpose.
So if you want to post photo of the equipment or "hey see this" message it is ok. But if you want to publish something of more permanent visibility, Facebook is the last place to do it.
My personal preference are forums as technically most suitable.
For some reason, hams are locked on mail lists which is also quite outdated media for exchanging knowledge purpose.

Horrible navigation, often poor performance and yet another damn login to remember. I try and aggregate my information, like multiple mailing lists to the one account. Heck, I've even got working Fidonet BBSs exchanging mail on multiple nets, bringing more stuff together. Oh, and the modern BBS platform had a few tricks that web forums don't, like multi protocol access (web, telnet/SSH, NNTP, mailing list access to the same information) - something for everyone. This flexibility of access is something that is lost on web forum developers. :( At least with mailing lists, I can choose to access my email using Thunderbird, Mutt or Gmail's web interface (using IMAP allows me to switch clients routinely). Web forums are an annoying one size (doesn't) fits all proposition that work poorly for me.

They still serve a purpose.
BTW I actually did this in 2012 the group still exists but has no activity anyone who wants to join is welcome I will remove it's secret status.

I've since found out that "AmprNet" is trademarked, so I removed the group. Sorry for the confusion.

I have no problem with mailman. If it had a way to search the archives that would be good. I also think we need some sort of place to upload code and documents. So groups.io would get my vote if we were going to do something external/not hosted ourselves. I don't see Facebook as a good place to really do anything productive.
By the way one week has gone by on the ET Docket 17-215 (its open until October 30 for comment), and we have three comments. (https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/)
Groups.io has no mechanism for uploading the archives of the mailing list, which go back to 2009 and which I think are valuable.
There was a discussion with the site owner/architect about converting mailman lists and archives back in 2015, but it petered out without any resolution.
So I don't think groups.io is suitable for the 44net list. It seems like a fine place for new mailing lists to be hosted, but not for old ones like this one.
You are right that we need a place to upload code and documents.
The wiki is suitable for small documents, more like for info pages, but for serious stuff we don't have anything at this moment. A long time ago we had ftp.ucsd.edu, but it's a legacy site that's likely to finally die some day soon, and I no longer have any way to add stuff to it. - Brian

Brian,
Check this out: https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/194673 Sounds like they can import mbox format manually.
Tom
Yes, I'd seen that.
I don't know about importing 20,000 plus messages manually, but I suppose I should ask. (And it looks like some of the current list subscribers may have archives going back even further than my own, which means even more messages to import).
Thanks. - Brian

There is a software package for indexing and searching mailman archives which could possibly be installed on the 44net host, except 1) it's no longer maintained by the authors, and 2) it only indexes NEW postings - there's no way to stuff the archives into it without going through and re-submitting every message individually as though it were a new message. There are 20,571 messages in the archive at this moment; I'm not going to do that. - Brian

Dear All,
My two pennies about it from Polish perspective.
I do not like Facebook, I fully understand its conflict with my concept of freedom and I have been fighting with a need of having an account till 2014, when some other reasons forced me to do so.
However, facts are as follows. Polish usenet group pl.rec.radio.amatorskie is currently an uninhabited island. Although Polish usenet is in quite good condition (opposite to opinions in another thread), only electronic group (pl.rec.elektronika) is alive among topics similar to radio. There are several foras with some ham discussion, but the activity is very limited there.
On the contrary, the FB group for Polish hams has currently more than 2000 subscribers (when there are similar number of active licenses and even taking into the account that not every member is a ham, there are majority of hams here) and the discussion is so alive, that I am not able to read everything even logging every day.
So, what to do? There is no chance to advise 2000 people to move anywhere else. So I simply browse this group to be up-to-date. The same situation is with several other hobbies I am involved in.
This post is not an advise to create FB group (as I also think its a bad idea as this will split discussion to several places), nor any advise to make an FB account. But in many cases FB cannot be simply ignored.
