Many thanks to Brian N1URO for the diagnosis and necessary band-aid due to the ISP, in my case Comcast.
For what it is worth, I switched to Comcast blast awhile ago and could no longer update NTP from the Internet. Ping to servers worked. Funny, NTP was specified to pass their default firewall via a supplied rule.
My solution was to call and turn their combo router/modem into a modem only and use my old router.. Life was good again :-)

I had considered this option Russ. That means a whole lot of devices being uprooted and intermittent until I have it all working properly. My DOCSYS modem will allow bridge vs. gateway, so I may do that at some point. Getting the experience of configuring this gateway may help me get down that road eventually.
