Hello all,
Very glad to find out this community existed and this was all possible.
Back in October of last year, I had requested a small network block, like a /30 or the like. It was allocated, but after talking with other members of the list I wanted to look into direct BGP announcement, which would require a /24. I released the /30 allocation and have updated my request to be a direct /24 request now, request ID 7127. Is there anything I should do to help this process along? Please let me know if there is any other info I can provide, and thanks for this service.
Cheers, Wil - VA6WTR
Hello Wil,
Since you are requesting a BGP subnet, that process is routed to Chris G1FEF. Be patient.. I'm sure he will get back to you but since we're all volunteers, real-life gets in the way so sometimes delays happen.

The issue was I never received the request - when you place a request for a BGP subnet in a local pool it relies on the local coordinator approving the request, then it gets routed to me for the BGP processing. The first part never happened :(
Wil & I are now sorting it.
Thanks, Chris - G1FEF

Since all BGP requests ultimately go to G1FEF, why not ask him directly first?

I think the logic here is the local coordinator might be able to vet the person applying for address space. Possibly advise them on tecnical things as well. Else that becomes a lot of stuff that ends up on one persons shoulders.

Exactly -- the local coordinator does the vetting and advice and then the system sends it to Chris. I find it is also helpful for the local coordinator to give Chris a heads up on the request, eg. "I know who this is and what they want to accomplish" ....

Hello John,
While this can be true if the user requested a /24 from a local coordinator, it would go that route but this user didn't mention what he did. He also might have requested a block from 44.31.0.0/16 (the new approach Chris has been preferring) where Chris G1FEF is the coordinator there.

It is possible the regional coordinator may have a local preference as to where in his/her numbering plan, larger allocations are placed. Once the allocation is established, it is handed over to Chris for global action. He (Chris) will need knowledge of the underlying carriers involved and the ASNs of same. It is best if you already know a little about your carriers’ ability to support the request (unless of course you are, or represent the carrier).

What happens now is if the request for BGP is made with a state or country coordinator, when it is "approved" it is picked up by G1FEF who changes the allocated subnet. Why then is the local coordinator involved if the result is to be outside of the local plan? A longer view clarification needs to happen so as to avoid mistakes and questions.

At the point Chris suggests something else, the regional coordinator is not involved. Most (maybe all) the regionals are responsible for a specific subnet. If you are kicked upstairs, so to speak, then the regional is out of the picture. That is what happened to me for IRLP. I started with my regional, actually just using the portal for my first request (it was actually a legacy allocation set up by BrianK back in 2015).
When Chris got involved and understood what I wanted to do, he asked me about a larger block in 44.127-land. That is what I went with, and my regional coordinator was no longer involved. But it all started with my regional. If you are already down that road, by all means reach out to Chris. Once you are direct with Chris, there is no longer any need to involve your regional unless you are using part of his address space.

Hello 44Net'rs
One of the initiatives for the 2023 Technical Advisory Committee is to work on ironing out kinks in our current coordination process across all regions. Not a simple task, but definitely one that is needed.
As mentioned previously, we have limited resources to work with, and it is going to take time to service requests (sometimes too long). The current process is that local coordinators do initial work on the front end and provide prerequisite information to Chris before he can effectively service a request on the back end. We can't expect Chris to ping-pong emails to get information from everyone and do the entire process alone.
To improve our system, what is needed is an updated coordination procedure that applies policies uniformly and that doesn't rely solely on any one person to execute. Longer term, a new 44Net portal will help to implement and automate some of this.
To get improvements rolling, ARDC will be sending out a virtual meeting invitation to all local coordinators in February to discuss some of the pain points and to brainstorm about solutions.
