Shouldn't a volunteer for an amateur radio related organization actually have an amateur radio license _before_ volunteering? Otherwise the group gets diluted by those who don't know what being an amateur radio license holder and active participant is all about.

Hi Charles,
Good question. Certainly, amateur radio activity requires a license. More broadly, it’s also helpful to know that a volunteer is familiar with the ham community, and a license definitely signals that.
Some of our volunteer opportunities are not strictly ham-related, however, particularly in grant-making efforts, where we might benefit from contributions that could come from someone in an aligned or adjacent community. So yes, a ham license is helpful, and for some things, a ham license is going to be needed, but no, not every volunteer role needs to call for a license up front.
I know we’ve visited a similar question in the past, and some have a fairly exclusive view of ARDC’s mission, which no doubt reflects their own perfectly legitimate reasons for being involved. We certainly all find our way here by different paths. If the foundation's stated goals include bringing people in toward amateur radio (“digital communications” being at least one avenue), and if a volunteer interested in contributing thus finds their way toward being a part of the community, then it winds up being to everyone's benefit to welcome their curiosity and participation. In my view at least, it’s a great way to let someone see first-hand what being a ham is all about.

I disagree. This is the issue with a major amateur organization who has repeatedly hired incompetent leaders who act in their interests, not the organization. Limited searches result in limited results.

Constructive criticism is valuable, but dismissing others' contributions as incompetence doesn’t move us forward. If you believe you have deeper knowledge, a better leadership style, or ideas to improve our processes, I’d encourage you to put your own name forward for consideration.

I applied and was denied.(John was a great man). So I am biased. In all my effort I was not accepting where grants went to when I was denied. Maybe we first need to see where grants are going to non experimental radio operators ( being called hams or amateurs are not in the intent of cooperating) I actually found it sad to see where. We need past ampr people to be on the board and to discuss before we bring problems onto the public. (Nov?) I will not walk away from Ampr and don’t expect to be banned. But we all know NOV has. It’s not a hobby and never has been after 911 when our abilities where taken away with also all our investments and hardware and friendships and yes credit and credibility and credentials. Long live experimental radio. We give !

Hi, John:
In regard to ARDC and 44net resources, I am only interested in the Amateur Radio community and Amateur Radio technologies. Absolutely. I don’t think I’d be going out on a limb to say amateur radio isn’t going anywhere as far as ARDC is concerned. I see amateur radio happening in this community every day. In fact, one of the things I myself want to do is help others see what I see, so we can all do more to celebrate each others’ successes. Stick around and we’ll see what we can do to shine more light on the amazing things that are happening all over the place in 44Net and in amateur radio.
