Rob (and other)
Ill try to explain you why you see a "strange " person deal with Junk Routers
(such as Home Microtik ) for AMPRNet usage
before I left the business (20 years ago ) we had a very powerful countrywide network
that had two InterNet connections sites to the AMPRNET
and had a 1200 9600 and 2.4GHZ (that time wasnt the WIFI Protocole yet ) Breeze Com
Units with 2MB/s connectivity connected to the AMPRNET
when i left all collapse and we had no network for the last 15 years
Now when i return i start to build everything from Scratch (there is no RF port at all
in all the country) with emphasis on High speed connectivity (2.4GHZ WIFI Access points)
and when i try to find solutions for the home amateurs 2 main points are standing
beside my eye
1) low cost
2) as simple as possible
almost no one will add a Raspberry pi to his shack and config it to server as AmprNet
Router to get a Network for his home
But instead of buying a TP-Link home router if he will be able to put a Mikrotik
home router that support IPIP and with a very simple commands (or web interface ) he
will be able to configure it to do IPIP to a central machine that will provide him
amprnet access (or even directly from UCSD) im sure a lot of users will do it
Of course these solutions is not for a BackBone Network
For BackBone we have some good solutions and we still check more( with the emphasis of
reliability and redundancy) (for emergency usage)
1)Cisco Routers (but not only Cisco (every router that can do IPIP (and not a
computer and software solution)) (i have at home 2851 that have a Full amprNet tunnels for
all the 500 AMPRGateways working now for some moth zero problems)
This router will be moved to our Haifa Repeater and will deal beside the AMPRNet with
connecting the Repeater (which is a P25 Capable) to a worldwide P25 amateurs repeaters
network (the solution require only Cisco Router and if i have a router why not give it
deal also with amprNet ?)
2) setting a strong (and reliable) unix system server that will do the IPIP (and in
addition also Open Vpn )
3) testing even if a Pi can handle a backBone with reliable
But as for me (and the small group that help me accomplish all the above)
Im a RF , Hardware , Analog , Network, and some software (mainly installing (not
compiling and hardly configuring)) Person
I do not know Scripts and unfortunately the local help i get is very poor so if i cant
find software solutions i tend to look for a hardware solutions (routers instead of Linux
systems as example)
Just a week ago i got a board that stick into arduino and allow to make a DMR repeater
from two analog radios and connect it to the brandminster network , but the software on
the PC is for windows 7 and we have windows XP so when i asked someone to compile it for
Windows XP someone did it for me and when i try to run it an error occur and when i
asked what can be done no answer came on ...
just dew days ago another Software expert saw my distress and compile me a working
executable which run under XP
Now i can do My part (which is as I said before RF ) and build a repeater and if this
solution will work i can duplicate and build some DMR repeaters and connect them to the
worldwide network (we have in all the country only one Motorola Professional DMR
repeater connected to the MARC network only working few month) with this solution i
really hope i will be able to have some more repeaters (for me building a repeater is few
hours work)
So the main thing standing beside my eyes are solutions that will push the hams to enter
to the other sides of the hobbies (in our case AMPRnetwork)
Now you probably understand a little how it is hard to me and why you see me ask about
mikrotik home routers instead of dealing with PI or Liux and startampr

The best for now is to give up, and use some Linux
device (like
Raspberry Pi) to set 44networking.
We've been telling him that for weeks now...
